3 Ways to Prepare For Seasonal Change

As the transition from summer to fall begins, changes start to happen externally as well as internally. The days become shorter and the air gets cooler; our bodies change to adapt as well. Especially if you live in the PNW, you may start to feel the effects of ‘Seasonal Affective Disorder.’ Some changes people notice are lower energy, sleep disturbances and even insomnia, lower moods, and even changes in weight. However, there are some simple things that can be done to help you stay healthy thru the seasonal changes.

Here are 3 ways to prepare for seasonal change:

  1. Let go of negativity

The autumn season represents the time when the lungs and large intestine are of the utmost importance. This season is especially an important time to let of negative energy in your life.

Negativity doesn’t just affect your psychological health but your physical health as well. You can help get rid toxicity in your life by being aware of the causes and surrounding yourself with positive energy and people who make you happy. Simple things to do to stay positive are to continue to nourish your body with high quality protein, good fats, small frequent meals, and proper hydration! Don’t forget about the power of using food as medicine to help nourish your body which can have a direct effect on your mood and energy! Read our previous article on using food as medicine, here.

  1. Spend time outside

Because fall is focused on the lungs, spending more time outside can help strengthen this organ and increase your immune system as cold and flu season starts to emerge.

Spend time in nature away from city pollution where you can breathe clean, cool air. Autumn time is the perfect opportunity to do this and refresh and strengthen the lungs. Simple tip is to continue to move, even during the fall and winter. Having a step goal daily can help to keep motivation up. Even if it is a 15-30 minute walk can have a direct positive effect on mood and energy! Read more about how walking can have a profound impact on your health, here.

  1. Acupuncture

You may have guessed it but acupuncture can help you navigate seasonal changes! Acupuncture treatment can help you physically as well as mentally prepare for the change in seasons. Some find it difficult to let go of the summer season and transition to shorter, cooler days. Acupuncture can ease this transition and make sure your body and energy are flowing properly. Studies have shown that acupuncture can also help with the symptoms of SAD including fatigue, lower mood, and sleep disturbances.
