PCOS Definition:

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is an important cause of many menstrual irregularity symptoms in women. It is the most common endocrine and metabolic disorder among reproductive-age women. It is a disorder that accounts for an estimated 70% of ovulatory disorders and reported that 21% of women worldwide suffer from PCOS.
PCOS is where women develop multiple cysts on their ovaries. This also contributes to irregular menstruation, pain with ovulation, insulin resistance, excessive hair growth, hormonal acne, and one of the leading contributing factors to infertility.
PCOS Causes:
PCOS maybe caused by genetic and environmental factors. It is noted that approximately 25% of females with PCOS have a mother with PCOS.
PCOS Symptoms:
Women with PCOS often report these signs and symptoms:
- irregular menses
- increase in acne
- hirsutism or excessive hair growth
- overweight
- pain with ovulation
- anxiety and depression
