PCOS Definition:

  Natural treatments for PCOS

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is an important cause of many menstrual irregularity symptoms in women. It is the most common endocrine and metabolic disorder among reproductive-age women. It is a disorder that accounts for an estimated 70% of ovulatory disorders and reported that 21% of women worldwide suffer from PCOS.

PCOS is where women develop multiple cysts on their ovaries. This also contributes to irregular menstruation, pain with ovulation, insulin resistance, excessive hair growth, hormonal acne, and one of the leading contributing factors to infertility.

PCOS Causes:

PCOS maybe caused by genetic and environmental factors. It is noted that approximately 25% of females with PCOS have a mother with PCOS.

PCOS Symptoms:

Women with PCOS often report these signs and symptoms:

  • irregular menses
  • increase in acne
  • hirsutism or excessive hair growth
  • overweight
  • pain with ovulation
  • anxiety and depression
  • fertility concerns

Did you know that women with PCOS are at an increased risk for development of Type 2 Diabetes?

PCOS Treatments:

The current standard of care for women with PCOS are prescription medications, surgery, and often lifestyle changes are recommended. However, most women with PCOS continue to struggle with pain with ovulation, acne, weight fluctuations, and infertility and seek alternative treatments to help manage the symptoms.

Acupuncture can help.

Acupuncture and integrative medicine therapies have become increasingly popular for its safe and highly effective treatments with no or low side effects. Studies show that acupuncture and integrative medicine therapies are safe and effective treatments for PCOS. Acupuncture therapy may help PCOS by: increasing of blood flow to the ovaries, reducing the number of ovarian cysts, controlling blood sugar levels by helping with insulin sensitivity, and decreasing blood glucose and insulin levels and helping to reduce cortisol levels.
