Fit vs. Healthy

We often use the terms “fit” and “healthy” interchangeably, assuming that they mean the same thing. But the truth is, there’s a big difference between the two. Being fit doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re healthy, and being healthy doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re fit. Some people may be in great athletic shape, but actually neglecting their body’s other internal health needs. So, what’s the difference?

What does it mean to be ‘fit’?

Fitness is generally defined as the ability to perform physical activity or exercise. It’s a measure of how well your body can perform specific tasks, such as running a mile or lifting weights. While being fit can certainly contribute to overall health, it’s not the only factor.

What does it mean to be ‘healthy’?

Health, on the other hand, is a more comprehensive concept that encompasses physical, mental, and emotional well-being state. It’s not just about how your body performs, but also about how you feel and function on a day-to-day basis.

In fact, a study published in the International Journal of Obesity found that while physically fit individuals had lower rates of heart disease, they didn’t necessarily have lower rates of other chronic diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension.

There have been numerous cases where professional athletes in the peak of their careers have died of heart attacks and other natural complications. Could these deaths have been prevented by taking better care of their overall health? Possibly.

A physically fit body is typically a body that exudes health and vibrancy, however, this doesn’t mean that underlying illnesses such as cancer or cardiovascular disorders are not underneath the surface.

Incorporating healthy habits into your daily routine, such as eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, managing stress, and getting regular acupuncture can all contribute to your overall health and well-being.

How can acupuncture help?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and acupuncture, when there are meridian imbalances in the body, our organs are not functioning to their fullest capacity. Although you may feel in great athletic shape, when our body is out of balance, our organs are not getting the sufficient energy and blood flow they need to function properly. The best thing to do is listen to your body. If something feels off or you feel low energy, these could be signs of an imbalance in your body.

Acupuncture has been shown to help regulate metabolism, reduce pain, improve sleep, and even help with obesity. In a study from the International Journal of Obesity, found that acupuncture is an effective treatment for obesity. The found in a review of over 30 studies that those receiving acupuncture had significantly reduced a body weight and improved outcomes for body weight with little to no side effects. Therefore, acupuncture should be a part of your overall plan to optimize your health and well-being.
