Acupuncture for fibromyalgia

Is there hope for Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is defined as having widespread chronic musculoskeletal pain often accompanied by fatigue, sleep issues, mood changes, and anxiety. What is frustrating for those with these symptoms is that fibromyalgia is often a diagnosis of exclusion when all other conditions have been ruled out, and often there is no effective treatment options for fibromyalgia. Most commonly patients are placed on pharmaceutical medications to manage symptoms such as anti-depressants, muscle relaxers, SSRIs, and even anti-convulsant medications. These not only solve the root cause on why the patient developed these symptoms but often lead to other symptoms and side effects.

In a recent study looking at statistics on what non-pharmacological treatments people often try reported that 41% of people in this cohort used non-pharmacological treatment during their disease treatment, one of these being acupuncture.

What do the studies say?

In a recent study examining 12 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) showed that acupuncture was significantly better than sham acupuncture for pain reduction and improving quality of life for those with fibromyalgia. This study concluded that acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment option for those with fibromyalgia.
